A Clinical Study on Hand Injuries


Abstract
In recent years, the rate of hand injuries have been steadily increasing in this country, due to development of industrial and traffic accident.
Injuries of the hand are rarely life-threatening, yet the disability from residual deformity profoundly alters life.
Statistical observations were carried out on 120 patients of hand injuries who were treated at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Chonnam University Medical School, from January 1981 to June 1984, and following results were obtained.
1. The peak incidence was in the age group of 21~30 years (43.3%) and 75.8% were male.
2. Injured time was much more in afternoon time, especially, 12~18 hours (37.5%).
3. The injured ratio of both hands was 54.2% in right and 44.2%in left hand and main causes of injury were industial accident(62.5%) and glass accident (18.3%).
4. Most of injured patients (85 %) arrived at our hospital within 6 hours after accidents.
5. Of injured digits, 27. 5% were single digit involvement and in single digit involvement, thumb was most frequently involved(36.4%), and in multiple digit involvement, ring finger most (27.8%).
6. The most common type of injuries were deep skin laceration involving tendon, nerve and vascular structures (33.3%).
7. Of 105 operated cases, 68 cases (56. 7%) were able to operate within 6 hours after arrival at hospital and most of operated cases (83.5%) were operated under the local anesthesia.
8. Primary teno-and neurorraphy were treated in 42.3% of hand injured.
